Founded in 2023, J. Farm Initiative promotes agroecology and organic agricultural transformation in South Sudan by training farmers in sustainable practices. Its core mission is to enhance food production, increase incomes, restore environmental health, and revitalize indigenous crops, with education and training as a primary focus.

J. Farm Initiative implements traditional organic and agroecological farming approaches to enhance soil nourishment and mitigate crop yield risks, prioritizing education and training to meet future agricultural needs, preserve cultural traditions, and ensure sustainable environmental and community well-being.

Healthy and Quality Standard Farms

About Us

To maintain healthy and quality standard farms in South Sudan, J. Farm Initiative will employ a multi-faceted approach. This includes comprehensive farmer training on agroecological principles, organic certification standards, and post-harvest handling. They will also establish Internal Control Systems for group certification, peer monitoring, and transparent record-keeping. Furthermore, the initiative will provide quality inputs like organic seeds and natural fertilizers, introduce appropriate technology, and utilize demonstration farms and field schools for practical learning and farmer-to-farmer exchange.

J. Farm Initiative will also focus on market linkages and quality assurance by supporting value addition, connecting farmers to fair pricing markets, and educating consumers about organic produce. Furthermore, it will implement continuous monitoring and adaptive management through regular assessments, feedback loops, and research and innovation. These integrated strategies aim to empower South Sudanese farmers to consistently produce healthy, high-quality organic produce, fostering sustainable agricultural transformation.

J. Farm Initiative will invest in advanced farmer capacity and empowerment by fostering farmer-led research, engaging youth, developing leadership, and teaching financial literacy. It will also evolve quality assurance and certification through robust Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS), digital traceability, and continuous improvement cycles. J. Farm Initiative Thematic Priorities (Our Services)

Biodiversity Conservation

v  By incorporating biodiversity conservation into all farming practices, J. Farm Initiative will promote the protection and responsible management of South Sudan’s natural resources and will support sustainable development through working with farming communities.

v  J. Farm will promote the growing of indigenous and drought-resistant crops that are well-suited to the local environment, protecting natural habitats by avoiding deforestation and preserving local ecosystems.

v  The initiative will encourage agroforestry through the integration of trees and shrubs into farming systems to support wildlife and soil health and will train communities about the importance of biodiversity and how to protect it.

Farmers' Education

v  J. Farm Initiative will promote education for farmers, persons with disabilities, youth, and women in South Sudan through the organization of farmers’ training programs, conducting workshops and training sessions on organic farming, soil health, and sustainable agroecological practices specifically for young people and women, focusing on vegetable and other crop cultivation and entrepreneurship.

v  J. Farm Initiative will promote the integration of agricultural education into school curriculums, teaching students and pupils about farming, food security, and sustainability. It will establish local learning centers (demonstration farms) where farmers, students, youth, and women can gather to learn and share knowledge.

Youth and Women Economic empowerment 

v  By focusing on education, access, and empowerment, J. Farm Initiative will build sustainable economic opportunities for marginalized groups in agriculture.

v  The initiative will promote the education of farmers on economic empowerment programs for youth and women by conducting training sessions on financial literacy, business planning, and sustainable farming practices tailored for youth and women. For instance, it will provide training in skills such as vegetable and fruit processing, value addition, packaging, and branding to increase product value and profitability, and will connect youth and women to local and regional markets, ensuring they can sell their products with value added at fair prices.

v  The initiative will create Youth and Women-Focused Groups by establishing peer-led groups to share experiences, challenges, and successes in agriculture and entrepreneurship.

Sustainable Resilience Local Food Systems 

J. Farm Initiative aims to build sustainable and resilient local food systems in South Sudan, ensuring food security, improving livelihoods, and enhancing community well-being. This is achieved through three core strategies:

vPromoting Sustainable Agricultural Practices: Focusing on enhancing soil health, conserving water, and building climate resilience via crop diversification, integrated pest management, and organic/regenerative farming to reduce synthetic input reliance.

Strengthening Local Food Chains: By fostering local markets, shortening supply routes, and supporting value-added processing to boost farmer income, reduce waste, and support the local economy.

Fostering-Community Engagement: Empowering farmers through education, ensuring initiatives meet local needs, and building collaborative partnerships to enhance social cohesion and resilience.

Institutional Capacity Strengthening

To strengthen cooperatives and farms in J. Farm Initiative for agroecology and organic agriculture transformation in South Sudan, the following strategies should be implemented J. Farm Initiative to the farming groups:

vPovisioning of trainings on sustainable farming and cooperative management, ensure access to quality seeds, organic fertilizers, and irrigation systems, offer financial support through microloans or subsidies, facilitate market access for cooperatives, introduce appropriate technologies for soil health and pest control, advocate for supportive policies, and foster community collaboration. These steps will enhance institutional performance, resilience, and long-term sustainability in South Sudan’s agricultural sector.

Documentation of Indigenous and neglected African seeds

To transform J. Farm Initiative’s documentation of Indigenous and Neglected African Seeds in South Sudan, focusing on agroecology and organic agriculture, they should adopt a holistic, community-centric, and technologically appropriate approach.

vJ. Farm Initiative will implement farmer-led participatory documentation, training local farmers and providing tools to ensure accuracy, cultural relevance, and ownership of the seed data.

vThe initiative will integrate traditional knowledge and oral histories by conducting in-depth interviews to capture the cultural, ecological, and historical context of each seed, thereby preserving invaluable intangible heritage.

vJ. Farm will utilize appropriate and decentralized technology, including offline digital tools, visual documentation, community-level seed repositories, and GIS mapping, for resilient and accessible data management.
